Der erste Bericht über eine Antitumoraktiviträt von Extrakten von Boswellia serrata stammt von Jing und Mitarbeitern (1992) unter Verwendung von menschlichen HL 60 Leukämiezellen.

Untersuchungen, die 1999 in Tübingen durchgeführt wurden, zeigten ebenfalls eine Antitumorwirkung bei HL 60 Leukämiezellen sowie bei Glioblastomzellen. Es stellte sich jedoch bei all diesen Untersuchungen heraus, dass die in vitro verwendeten Konzentrationen von Boswelliaextrakten und Boswelliasäuren, die zur Hemmung des Tumorwachstums notwendig waren, wesentlich höher lagen als diejenigen, die eine Hemmung der Leukotriensynthese in Leukozyten bewirkten, wie dies auch aus der Tabelle hervorgeht. Andererseits ist es jedoch denkbar, dass niedrigere Konzentrationen von Boswelliasäuren bei solchen Tumoren wirksam sein könnten, die eng mit einer erhöhten Bildung von Leukotrien verbunden sind.
